Food Distributions Continue
The Samaritan's Purse team in Haiti continues to distribute food in the slum area of Cite Soleil. On Tuesday, we gave 85 tons of food to more than 3,400 households (about 20,000 people). This is double the amount we originally began distributing. We plan to continue distributing 85 tons for the duration of the program. The team reports that these distributions are now going very smoothly.
The medical clinic in Cite Soleil was opened Monday, and our medical staff has treated about 350 people. Prior to the earthquake, this was an underserved area. Our staff reports that they are seeing a variety of cases, including infections from injuries that have not been treated since the disaster. They are also seeing severe illnesses in children because of a lack of clean water and exposure to harsh conditions.
In other news:
• We have hired four national staff to begin assessing the damage to homes in Leogane, Petit Goave, and Grand Goave.
• We are beginning to hire permanent staff to establish a longer-term presence in Haiti.
• Since the earthquake, our medical personnel at Baptist Haiti Mission have helped perform some 250 surgeries and hundreds of castings and repairs. They have seen more than 4,000 people.
